how to mix black and brown in one outfit

Whenever I try to imagine where some fashion rule started, my mind goes to the ‘cerulean blue’ scene of The Devil Wears Prada. It’s when Meryl Streep goes on a venomous (yet classy) tirade about the color differences in two almost identical belts. Her case in point: what makes no sense to the untrained eye is really a calculated decision. And one fashion gurus decision can affect everyone from designer to consumer. So my personal version of a ‘cerulean blue’ belt is the mix of black and brown. I have no idea who set the standard for this but somewhere along the way it became faux pas. Fortunately, that rule has started to get the boot in recent years. It’s now a chic and trendy way to begin dressing for fall/winter. I like to choose one dominant color and accent it with the other. That way it’s more subtle (especially if you’re still in the camp of naysayers). Then pop on a punchy lip color for that dramatic finish to a contemporary style.
