Our condo is full of funky angles. It’s a converted firehouse (no, there’s no pole–everyone asks if there’s a pole) with exposed brick and duct work. We loved that it was like no interior we’d ever seen before. But that left me with not-so-affectionately nicknaming one of our spaces “the awkward room.” I had no other descriptors and, for the longest time, no design plan. It’s a substantial size but the ceiling dips low at one point to not quite allow for standing. And up until recently (when we decided to stay here for a while longer), we hadn’t considered the possibility of a formal dining space. But that “awkward” room perfectly lends itself to this concept. Those lower ceilings can now create an intimate layout without imposing on the functionality. And we’ll continue to focus on walnut as the predominant wood while peppering in a few metallic accents and bold art pieces. Here are the dining room inspiration pieces I’ve got my eye on.
one: an oversized abstract art piece to fill the room’s largest wall
two: this mobile chandelier with adjustable arms for a modern yet elegant statement
three: the beauty and function of an expandable mid century dining table
four: these armchairs for the head table seats
five: a feminine yet neutral rug to warm the interior with plush fabric
six: this large storage cabinet to be a home for platters, glasses, and the upscale tableware
seven: an accent bar cart in brass to play up just a touch of glam
eight: these Hans Wegner style dining chairs for side seats around the table
nine: a large buffet to provide both storage and a serving surface for parties
ten: touches of greenery like this succulent arrangement to offer natural elements
