My idea of the perfect New Year’s Eve outfit has changed a lot over the years. I’ve gone from dressing like a hoodlum (for no apparent reason other than to wear baggy sweats in public), to sequins that practically scream at you, to this: a more sophisticated yet bold ensemble. So through all that trial and error, I’ve come up with my own anatomy of the ideal NYE outfit.
part one: a warm coat – I’m a slow learner in this area. Every year I fight my New England practicality and go without, but I quickly get grumpy from the chill. Instead, this year, I’m leaning toward a cozy yet voguish layer with leather + shearling.
part two: a metallic wardrobe piece – Whether a skirt, shirt, pants, or this shimmery jacquard dress, I steer clear of too many sparkles and instead gravitate toward matte tones. They fit the party bill without overwhelming my (or anyone else’s) senses.
part three: patent leather pumps – It’s a classic and simple option that can’t go wrong. Even in warmer climates with strappy sandals the shiny material complements the rest of the look.
part four: a statement clutch – The finishing touch is all in a choice of bag. If you’ve suffered from lack of sparkle or sequins, this is the chance to make it happen. A bold purse can give that desired attitude and edge to the whole shebang.
And presto, there you have it: my more ‘adultish’ approach to dressing for the occasion in style. We’re calling it a short week to reset + refresh while welcoming the New Year. I wish you all a very happy celebration and look forward to seeing you back here in 2016! xx
